PhD Position:Modeling of Local Properties during Thermomechanical Processing

Materials Center Leoben Forschung GmbH (MCL) is a leading competence center in the field of materials research and technology. In this context, we support numerous companies in the production sector developing high-performance materials, manufacturing processes and products. By developing specific computer-aided technologies, we accelerate materials based innovation including the digitalization of the manufacturing chain as well as of products. Our portfolio includes cooperative research and development projects with international and national partners from the production and research sectors as well as several consulting, laboratory and simulation services in materials science.

Your Profile:

• Academic degree (master equivalent) in engineering or science such as materials science, metallurgy, mechanical engineering, physics, etc.
• Experience with numerical simulation desirable, especially with Finite Element simulation.
• Basic programming skills in Python or equivalent.
• Interest in the influence of the material microstructure on the macroscopic mechanical properties.
• Good oral and written communication skills in English.
• Scientific curiosity, team skills, self-initiative.
• Mobility for business trips to company partners and international conferences.

Tasks & Responsibilities:

• Development of material models for microstructural changes of steels during processing.
• Planning, coordination and evaluation of accompanying experimental investigations.
• Thermal and mechanical finite element analysis.
• Coordination with other numerical and experimental research groups at MCL, university and industry partners.
